The Meaning of Stay
By Larry Krone
When you saw me in the window of the corner saloon
I was barking and howling at the moon
I had a big bowl of Jack Daniels on the floor for my drink
I was the drunkest ole dog in the room
You came in to claim me and I bought you a beer
Together we got really sauced
You sang how much is that doggie in the window to me
You couldnt have predicted the cost.
What would you do with a man like me
Who all I want to do is play
Yeah what would you want with an ole hound dog like me
Who doesnt know the meaning of stay
Well you took me home, cleaned me up, and taught me some new tricks
No more would I be just a stray
I can perform every trick but theres one that just wont stick
I cant learn the meaning of stay
No I dont know the meaning of stay
Someday the gravy train will be all dried up at your station
My rawhide bones will be just little scraps of frustration
Ill sniff around the town for something new to grab me
Just a hobo hound dog on the road with my fifth and ukelele
What would you do with a man like me
Who all I want to do is play
Yeah what would you want with an ole hound dog like me
Who doesnt know the meaning of stay
I guess Ill never learn the meaning of stay
